International Officers 2020-2021

International President

Art Brassard

Western Canada Federation - Prince Albert Club - Prince Albert, SK Canada
I joined the Prince Albert Club in October 1988. Since then I have held every office position in the club except secretary. This year (2019) I will be the president of the club, the third time that I have held this position. I was treasurer of the WCF for five years, 2001-2006, on the WCF board for five years and was the governor in 2016-2017.
In the Prince Albert Club, I have worked on all their projects and have looked after the club annual fishing trip for the past 25 years.  in 2016, with the suggestion from fellow Cosmo member Morris Hesje, that we look at doing a football pool to see if we could raise money for the club’s charity donation account. So, I developed this pool lottery using our CFL Saskatchewan Roughrider’s season games and the three CFL play-off games. This project is now in it’s third year and we have raised over $32,000 each year, with a profit of over $16,000.00 going into our charity donation account.
I was married to my wife Debbie for 42 ½ years, and have three children; Joeleene, Joey, and Corey. We have seven grandkids; Joshua, Brandon, Katie, Abbigale, Edward, Genevieve, Donald.  I lost my wife December 1, 2018 after a two-week illness.  I have been a professional drive all my working life. 33 years as Driver Instructor and now drive for a tour bus company in Prince Albert. This year I will reach the 3-million-kilometer mark of accident free driving.

President Elect

Darin Hartman

Cornbelt Federation, Council Bluffs Club - Council Bluffs, IA
Darin joined Cosmopolitan International in May of 2015.  He saw a flyer for a upcoming Cosmo Fundraising evert and saw that is was a Diabetic Fundraising Club.  Darin has been a Type 1 Diabetic since he was a young child.  Since joining Cosmopolitan International, Darin has held the positions of Vice-President  and President at the club level and Governor –Elect and Governor at the Federation level.  With his new position as Vice-President of Marketing and Fundraising, Darin is afforded the opportunity to do what he likes best.  Spreading the word about Cosmo, and helping fight s disease that has hit very close to home for him.
Darin has been a Type 1 Diabetic since kindergarten, and has seen many advancements in resources available to Diabetics.  Beside himself, Darin’s dad, niece, grandmother and cousin have all fought Diabetes.  His mother has often told him that being the parent of a T1D is the hardest job she has ever had.
Darin’s professional career has led him through careers that have coincided with Diabetes.  From retail pharmacy, insurance agent, and a recruiter/trainer for Senior Sales in the Medicare field, Darin has never lost touch with the effects of Diabetes through all ages and types of Diabetes.  Darin has a wealth of knowledge in Healthcare, Marketing, Fundraising, and networking.  He seems to know someone in every field.

Vice President of Marketing and Fundraising

Amy Berendzen

MoKan Federation - Jefferson City Club - Jefferson City, MO
Amy proudly became a JC Cosmo in August 2017.  As Jefferson City, Missouri is her hometown, she was well-aware of the greatness the Jefferson City Cosmopolitan Club shared with the community, and the philanthropic difference they’ve made for many years.  Following the type 1 diabetes diagnosis of her then 13 year-old son, William, in December 2016, she decided it was time to join her friends and members of the club that fights diabetes.  Since that very first meeting, she went right to work being an advocate for her fellow T1D families in Jefferson City – and beyond.
Currently, Amy is her Club’s Vice President of Membership, an office she has held since 2019.  She was recognized as the Jefferson City Cosmopolitan Club’s 2018-2019 Rookie of the Year, and also as Cosmopolitan International’s 2018-2019 Rookie of the Year.  These are more than “just awards to her.”  She’s making it her life’s work to change the way kids and families see, hear and feel about a T1D diagnosis.  Together, with her family, they organized a Beat T1D in JC dodgeball tournament, sponsored by her JC Cosmos Club, by which all proceeds go to Jefferson City School District nurses offices to assist them in providing care and supplies for students with T1D.  Amy also served on Cosmopolitan International’s 2020 Marketing Task Force.
Communications, marketing and public relations have been Amy’s career focus for over 25 years.  She’s directed communications, marketing and public relations for Capital Region Medical Center (a University of Missouri Health Care affiliate), the Jefferson City School District and presently serves Missouri’s Lieutenant Governor, Mike Kehoe and staff, as their Communications Director.  In Amy’s book, PR is more than Public Relations.  It also equates to Performance + Recognition.  PR is much more than fluff and spin.  PR professionals take their roles as reputation managers, mindful marketers, smart strategists, networking professionals and credible communicators to heart.  Both professionally, and personally, purpose defines her.  Passion fuels her.  Pride drives her.
Married to her husband, Ron, for 25 years, they are the proud parents of Brooke Elizabeth, who is pursuing a career in the field of medicine, and William Ramsey, who is now a junior in high school.  William is a three sport student athlete who enjoys playing baseball, football and wrestling, and is showing the world that kids with T1D can do anything they set their minds to. The Berendzen family is committed to advocating for and supporting T1D families like theirs.  Although a cure for T1D won’t change their family’s story or trajectory, they remain optimistic of a future free of T1D.
