What You Need To Know!

The registration fee is higher this year than for previous conventions.  Why?

The package fee this year includes seven meals and two excursions with motorcoach transportation, which is more than what was offered in some previous years.  Plus, the $89 guest room rate is significantly lower than that of previous years.  The committee felt that the registration fee was a good value for all the meals and activities that are included.

This is our 100th anniversary year.  What activities are planned to recognize this occasion?

The anniversary committee has several fun activities planned.  Look for a pre-convention trivia contest, an Opening Ceremonies game that promises roaring laughter, and cool giveaway items.  And you just never know what famous person may show up!

What do I do when I first arrive?

A Kansas City Royals baseball game is offered Wednesday afternoon, and we have only 40 tickets available to our group.  This means you should register early and plan to arrive in Kansas City Wednesday morning if you plan to attend the game.  If you are not planning to attend the game, be sure to catch up with Cosmo friends for complimentary pizza in the Hospitality Suite Wednesday evening.

When do I register on site?

Registration opens at 3 p.m. Wednesday and is available with varying hours through Saturday.  Check the Schedule of Activities for specific times.  Be sure to register before Convention officially begins Thursday morning to pick up your name badge and other important information (and some cool stuff!).

What is the Hospitality Suite about?

The Hospitality Suite is open each evening and is the gathering spot for Cosmos to catch up with old friends and new.  Beverages and snacks are served, and on Wednesday evening, complimentary pizza is available.  Be sure to stop by!

What happens at the Cosmopolitan Educational Forum?

Training of our members is an important function of Cosmopolitan International.  Each year at Convention, we offer an educational session on various topics.  This year, Membership and Fundraising will be the focus of the forum.  In addition to this training at Convention, additional training opportunities on a variety of topics will be available throughout the year.

What takes place at the Health Fair?

New this year is a health fair where local diabetes-related businesses will showcase their goods and services.  We anticipate a high turnout not only of vendors, but of Cosmo members and the general public, as well.  The Cornbelt Diabetes Connection’s Mobile Unit also will be present at Convention, and you don’t want to miss a chance to tour this state-of-the art facility.

What events and meeting may newcomers attend?

Everything…almost.  Newcomers as well as seasoned members who purchased the package registration should feel free to attend all events with the one exception of the Past International President (PIP) dinner Wednesday evening.  Those who have never attended convention previously will not want to miss the First-Timers event, which also is a good refresher for long-time members as well.  Those who registered for ala carte events are welcome at the first-timers event, the board meetings and the delegate meeting.

What is a delegate?  How do I know if I am one?

Am important feature of any convention is the voting that takes place by “delegates.”  This occurs at the Delegates Meeting which is scheduled for Saturday morning.  In the weeks and months preceding Convention, each club selects one delegate per ten members of the club to represent the club and vote on important issues that are discussed during the Delegates Meeting.  If you volunteer or are asked to serve as a delegate, your club officers will discuss this with you in advance of international convention.  If you are unsure if you are a delegate to this year’s international convention, please speak with your club president.

I’m new and don’t really know a lot of people.  How can I meet people?

First-timers will wear a ribbon on their name badges indicating that this is their first international convention.  Seasoned members are very good about introducing themselves to first-timers, making them feel comfortable and introducing them to other people.  If you are a first-timer and aren’t meeting people, just let someone at the registration table know and soon you will find yourself with lots of Cosmo friends.

What should I wear to all the different events?

International Convention, overall, is a fairly casual event.  The only event that is formal is the International President’s Awards Banquet, where you will find tuxedos or suits for gentlemen and evening attire for ladies.  For fun, social events such as the Explore KC museum tour, the talent show, and Harrah’s casino, “smart casual” summer attire is appropriate.  Board meetings, business luncheons, and dinners at the hotel find both gentlemen and ladies in business casual attire.

What if I want to say something at the board meeting?  I’m not a board member.

All Cosmos are welcome to contribute at board meetings.  Board members typically sit surrounding the board table, and additional seating is provided throughout the room for non-board members.  Board meetings are a great opportunity to learn exactly what’s going on at International.

If you have specific questions about International Convention, please feel free to contact ED Tracy at (717) 295-7142 or email headquarters@cosmopolitan.org.  No question is too big or too small.  We want to make sure you have all the information you need to have a great international convention experience!
